Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Festival 2013
Submitted by Katie on Fri, 08/16/2013 - 10:06amIt’s an annual tradition. Aspen is THE place to be for Labor Day weekend year in and year out. The summer-long Jazz Aspen Snowmass Music Festival comes to a climactic close with this 3-day soulful singing extravaganza in Snowmass, August 30-September 1, and it draws thousands of music lovers from all over the mountains and beyond. The 2013 JAS Labor Day Festival promises to be as exciting as ever, with an A-list lineup of rock n’ roll, bluegrass, country and pop (including the classic cult concert favorites Journey!) Get ready for a bang-up weekend celebrating summer, sounds, family and friends at this incredible festival event.
The weekend begins on Friday August 20, with 6pm and 8:30pm showtimes on the main festival stage. Alt-rock favorites Grace Potter & the Nocturnals open the weekend with radio hits like “Stars” and “Paris”. Immediately following is the talented, fast-singing style of pop icon Jason Mraz, whose fun-loving hits “Remedy and “I’m Yours” put him all over the musical map. Two other venues, the Outside Music Lounge and the Village Stage will be active through the weekend; on Friday look for Selah Sue and the No Joe’s on these more intimate stages.
Saturday has 3 headlining acts on the main stage: Little Big Town at 3pm, Train at 5pm and country legend Keith Urban at 7:15pm. Musketeer Gripweed and Big Dog & the Midnight Badgers will round out the biggest day of the festival on the secondary Village and Outside Music Lounge stages. Train, a hugely popular alternative pop act with such hits as “Drops of Jupiter” and “Hey, Soul Sister” is a perennial live music crowd pleaser, and will set the stage beautifully for country legend Keith Urban.
For the grand finale, none other than the famous 80’s rock band Journey will grace the Main Stage at Sunday at 7:15pm. Quite possibly the most widely covered band at parties, concerts and weddings everywhere, Journey is famous for producing the most astronomical anthem of the 80’s, “Don’t Stop Believin’”. They perform live on the main stage at 7:15 pm. Leading the way for Journey is Paper Bird at 3pm. Their variety of sweet, soulful, harmonic folk rhythms is a perfect entrée to a Sunday afternoon of music. Next up is Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, the popular LA-based festival favorite. Just as comfortable performing in a neighborhood park as they are on a festival stage (as they will be in Snowmass, at 5pm on Sunday), this indie rock band delivers a unique blend of gospel, roots, and psychedelic folk with a powerful energy. In addition, the lyrical indie trio South of France hits the Outside Music Lounge stage for more Sunday fun. For the full lineup, plus ticket and VIP package information, visit the festival website.
When you take a break from the music, there is plenty to keep you busy and happy this Labor Day weekend. Experience a different type of rock star at the 41st annual Motherlode Volleyball Tournament in at Koch Lumber Park and Wagner Park. Men, women and co-ed amateur and professional teams compete in the 6-day tournament that is an annual Aspen Labor Day tradition.
Shakespeare in the Park presents another free performance on August 30-31 at the Galena Plaza, behind the Aspen Public Library. The Hudson Reed ensemble performs Romeo & Juliet in the beautiful outdoor park setting that encourages you to relax with a picnic at 6pm each evening. Also on tap for the weekend, and just steps from your comfortable Aspen lodging at Molly Gibson Lodge, The Aspen Saturday Market has been brimming all summer with incredible local, Colorado-grown produce, local crafts and a diverse gourmet food court. It’s in full swing for this holiday weekend- from 8am-3pm on Saturday- and a wonderful place to spend your morning before the Jazz Festival concerts beginning at 3.
Kids, families and even pets will enjoy this weekend wrap-up of summer (yes pets- Molly Gibson is proud to be Aspen’s favorite pet-friendly hotel). Enjoy the food, festivals and fantastic tunes at the top Colorado destination for Labor Day weekend!
