It has been a whirlwind of activity this summer in Aspen, CO with so many local events! June and July have been loaded with vibrant, successful aspen events, but the excitement continues through Labor Day with some of the best summer events still to come. Ongoing all summer is the Aspen Music Festival and School, which still has a lively lineup in store for another three weeks. Look forward to dozens of concerts still in store with performances by the Aspen Philharmonic and the Aspen Festival Orchestra and more. On July 26th and 30th, the Aspen Opera Theater Center presents "Sweeney Todd", the Tony Award winning musical melodrama by Stephen Sondheim. Monday August5th is this year’s much anticipated Season Benefit- dinner on stage with baritone Nathan Gunn following his diverse performance of cherished American standards and Tom Waits favorites. Chamber Concerts, Baby Got Bach series and various individual recitals continue through August 19th, when the Festival will hold its grand finale concert with a knockout performance of Mahler’s orchestral and vocal masterpiece, “Symphony of a Thousand”.
Also on the repertoire through mid-August are three more dates for of the Snowmass Village Free Concert series on Thursdays. It’s a perfect venue for leisurely picnicking on the beautiful Snowmass Lawn to listen to sweet summer sounds of this beloved weekly concert. No worries if you want to travel light to the show there is inexpensive grilled fare and beer and wine for purchase. If the little ones get antsy check out the Family Fun Zone with bouncy house, face painting. juggling and more to keep them entertained.

The Aspen musical season comes to a close with its annual bang with the annual Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Festival August 31-September 2. Steve Miller Band and Sugarland kick off the event, also featuring Michael Franti, and it culminates on September 2 with crowd-riling bad-boy rapper Kid Rock on stage at Snowmass Town Park.
On Wednesday evenings the Snowmass Rodeo continues with 3 more fun-filled dates in August. Arrive at 5pm to entertain the kids with pre-rodeo diversions including a petting zoo, roping lessons and mechanical bull rides. Vendors selling Western wares and BBQ in the Hickory House wilI keep you busy before the old-fashioned rodeo begins at 7pm. If you dare, sign up to be part of the rodeo action with Mutton Bustin’ and Calf Scramble competitions. Stick around after the event for marshmallow roasting around the campfire to the tunes of Western crooner Twirp Anderson.
The Mother Lode Volleyball Tournament is an annual favorite in Aspen, CO – one of our hallmark summer athletic events Aug 30 - Sept 3. Celebrating its 40th year, the event has grown to become the most comprehensive beach doubles volleyball tournament in North America. Volleyball Magazine has termed "the social event of the outdoor volleyball season". This 5 day event has 17 divisions of play for men and women. It has drawn players such as the Australia’s Olympic Champion Dain Blanton to many of the USA’s top AVP and USA National Team players like Vince Robbins, Mike Whitmarsh, Canyon Ceman, Adam Jewell, Dax Holdren, Albert Hanneman, Linda Hanley, Leanne Schuster, Nancy Mason, Danalee Bragado, Liz Pagano, and Rachel Wacholder. Since 1972, The MotherLode is, still, that fun little tournament held every Labor Day Weekend in the mountain hamlet of Aspen, Colorado. The USA Pro Cycling Challenge enters its second year in August, with the world’s finest and most competitive cyclists visiting the Colorado Rocky Mountains for this week-long, statewide race. On Wednesday, August 22, Stage 3 starts in Gunnison, CO and climbs 9,6,23 vertical feet over 130.5 miles to end in front of Hotel Aspen at approximately 3:45 pm.
